We needed Internet security to augment government compliance management and reports, apart from Internet security

Mr. Abdul Kadir Twahir
IT Manager
TMEA

“We used a network security solution to protect the network from malware threats and provide secure Virtual Private Network connectivity.” said Mr. Abdul Kadir Twahir, the IT Manager of TMEA. “Soon we realized that we had an old and unsatisfactory solution”, he further added.

TMEA faced network security issues related to:

Business Continuity Concerns

The employees working in the company and users on the move often exchanged sensitive data, communicated using video conferencing and tried to access the resources remotely but they faced frequent connectivity issues. Hence secure and uninterrupted inter-connectivity was a matter of concern for the company.

Malware Menace

The employees spent most of their time in unproductive surfing. Certain websites were such that they contained malware and infected the network. These malware entered the network in the form of computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware and other malicious programs and were so hazardous that they had the potential to change the behavior of any feature, corrupt any file and more.

Unrestrained Unsolicited Emails

Mr. Twahir said, “Out of the total mails received, a shocking 40% was Spam. This was incredible and a subject of concern for us!” The employees had to delete these unsolicited emails, which was a tedious and time consuming job. As a result productivity suffered. In addition, it also consumed unnecessary bandwidth and storage space.

Uncurbed Web Surfing

The employees spent most of their time in surfing, chatting, downloading and accessing unrestricted websites. In addition, due to lack of a reporting solution, it was very difficult to keep an eye on the employees and restrict them from such activities. Hence productivity was adversely affected.

The Cyberoam Solution

In order to address these challenges Mr. Twahir considered many products like Sonicwall, McAfee, Checkpoint and Cisco but they were not satisfied and finally opted for Cyberoam after recommendations from Techbiz - a service provider. TMEA deployed six Cyberoam UTM appliances in Gateway Mode. The models and locations of the appliances are given below.

Appliance Details Location Office Identity
CR 50ia Nairobi Head Office
CR 25ia Arusha (EAC) Branch Office
CR 15i Dar Es Salaam Branch Office
CR 15i Kampala Branch Office
CR 15i Bujumbura Branch Office
CR 15i Kigali Branch Office

Post-deployment of Cyberoam TMEA received the following business benefits:

  • Business Continuity Restored

The VPNC-certified Cyberoam enables easy communication with the existing network infrastructure and provides secure access with remote offices. Hence it helps in easy establishment of the tunnel and data can also be transmitted securely. The central and branch offices can now communicate easily and securely through VPN.

Mr. Twahir said, “The ease with which the connectivity and security issues have been resolved through Cyberoam is just great”.

  • Network Perimeter Secured

Cyberoam’s ICSA and CheckMark Level 5 Certified firewall offers stateful and deep packet inspection for network, application and user-identity. Its Fusion technology enables granular access control over multiple security features through a single interface. The Cyberoam UTM firewall thus protects organizations from unauthorized access, DoS, DDoS, and IP Spoofing attacks.

  • Malware Corked Off

Cyberoam gateway Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware solution is CheckMark Level 5 Certified. This solution provides the company with web, email and Instant Messaging security against malware like worms, Trojans, viruses and spyware. It also scans the web and mail traffic- SMTP, POP3, IMAP, HTTPS, HTTP, VPN tunnels and FTP and ensures that no malware enters the network.

Mr. Twahir said, “The ease with which Cyberoam’s Anti-Virus solution prevents malware entry in the network is great”.

  • Unsolicited Emails Restrained

Cyberoam’s Gateway Anti-Spam is CheckMark Level 5 Certified. Its content and language independent RPD technology which is based on patterns protects the inbox of individual users from getting flooded with Spam emails. In addition it offers Virus Outbreak Detection technology that protects against real-time massive virus outbreaks.

Praising Cyberoam Mr. Twahir said, “Cyberoam’s Anti-Spam solution, efficiently blocked Spam mails and led to clean mailbox”.

  • Web Surfing Curbed

Cyberoam’s Web filtering solution controls the users from accessing unrestricted web sites by providing a comprehensive URL database with millions of URLs divided into 82+ categories to block them. Bandwidth can also be assigned accordingly to save network bandwidth and increase productivity. In addition HTTPS controls scan the web traffic and blocks unauthorized, malicious illegal HTTPS websites thereby preventing data leakage.

Mr. Twahir said, “The ease with which Cyberoam’s web filtering solution has controlled unproductive web access is excellent”.

  • Controlled Monitoring – Who is doing what?

Cyberoam’s reporting feature enables the company to know “Who is doing What?” across the network and remote locations. Cyberoam’s on-appliance reporting solution eliminates the need for independent reporting solution thereby reducing cost and need for extra peripherals. By providing 1000+ granular reports, the company can keep a track of each employee and know the work trend. Hence based on the trend, the company can also tweak the business policies to stop the surfing habits of the users.

On the other hand the employees knowing that their activities are being monitored will work accordingly, leading to increased productivity.

Mr. Twahir said, “Cyberoam’s unmatched features have enabled us to achieve remarkable increase in the Return over Investment (RoI)”.

  • To Conclude

Being satisfied Mr. Twahir said, “Cyberoam is an excellent product delivering great value for every penny spent. Also the support is excellent. I would recommend Cyberoam to everyone looking for a security solution”.
