SOS Children’s Village - NGO picks Cyberoam for its Security
About SOS Children’s Village International, NGO
The SOS Children's Village in Ha Noi City is part of an international network to help orphans and disadvantaged children. Each child who comes to the village becomes part of a permanent home and family.
The first SOS Children's Village was founded in 1949 by Dr. Hermann Gmeiner for children left without parents after WWII. By 1959, it has grown to an organization of ten villages spread across Europe.
At SoS Children’s villages they believe that children can only develop to their full potential if they have a supportive and protective family environment. The children participate in normal activities such as going to school and doing chores when they are home. They focus on each child’s care, education and health and they encourage children to actively take part in the making of decisions that affect their lives.
The SOS network basically comprised of confidential information .Hence we needed a good Internet security solution.
Mr. Viet Mai Thanh
SOS Children’s Village
According to Mr. Viet Mai Thanh, IT Manager at SOS Children’s Village, the company was facing the following security and connectivity challenges related to its business activities.
Network Perimeter Defense
The SOS’s network essentially consisted of student’s personal details and confidential documents. “There’s also a lot of money in the charity industry and that is the target for hackers. There is a bewildering array of malicious software: from worms and spyware to Trojans and Phishing masquerading as a trustworthy entity to acquire sensitive information. ”, said Mr. Thanh. However, at the same time, the authorities have a responsibility to protect users from network threats, and keep the network up and running. A top security priority was to establish a private network to keep confidential information safe from unauthorized users, hackers, and other threats. Consequently, Mr. Thanh wanted a gateway firewall for protection of their entire network.
Spam and Malware Menance
SOS Children’s Village wanted to secure its entire email network from newly emerging malware threats and reduce overall spam incidence. This was required to keep mails secure and in-boxes clean. The spam filtering was required to be totally automated and perform irrespective of the language and content of the mail with an absolute minimum amount of false positives - as no organization can afford to lose a single business opportunity should a legitimate email being wrongly classified as spam.
A perimeter level anti-virus solution was also required that could protect the network, scan and clean any malware or spyware over Web mail and scan all Web traffic to ensure the contents’ sanctity. Moreover, all files transferred over the Internet would have to be scanned to ensure that they are malware-free.
Control over Internet-Based Applications
In the absence of a Web content filtering solution, the employees wasted precious productive time in unproductive surfing and chatting. In many instances, unbridled and un-audited surfing, downloads, P2P usage and Instant Messaging applications ate into the precious bandwidth that powered the business critical applications. The organization needed to know who was accessing what sites and as such needed a content filtering solution that could provide audit data for users’ online behaviour.
SOS Children’s Village sought an Internet filtering solution that would not only save bandwidth, but also help increase productivity and best serve the company’s bottom line. “We needed a solution that would enable us to cut back on bandwidth usage and costs, rather than create new expenses” adds Mr. Thanh.
The Cyberoam Solution
SOS Children’s Village looked into a number of security products but they found Cyberoam UTM best among the rest in terms of features, stability and easy-to-use.
After understanding Cyberoam’s features Mr. Thanh decided to deploy One (1) unit of CR100ia at their head office in Gateway mode. They also found Cyberoam cost-effective compared to other products.
The business benefits were as follows:
- The Barricade of Fire – Firewall
The Cyberoam firewall acts as a filter between the company’s gateway and the Internet in order to block malicious attempts to access the network, and allow only legitimate traffic.
ICSA and Checkmark - dual certified Cyberoam’s stateful inspection firewall solution now cordons off SOS Children’s Village network and guards its servers against any unauthorized access. Also, employees were able to seamlessly continue to access Internet resources, while hackers on the Internet are kept at bay. The organisation’s users are given controlled access to network and internet resources, ensuring that no security loopholes are left open.
- Malware and Spam Free Internet
Cyberoam’s gateway antivirus and anti spyware features guard all the web and mail protocols and ensure that no malware or spyware sneaks through the perimeter. Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD) powered signature-less anti spam technology works instantly on deployment, with the least human intervention and is language independent. It blocks spam in any language regardless of the content, e.g. image, audio, video or zip-based spam. The anti spam feature is also equipped with Virus Outbreak Detection. This protects the organization against any zero day attack.
- Browsing Check Accomplished
By customizing employees’ identity-based policies, the administrator provides selective Internet access and surfing rights based on the employees working needs. “I can now prioritize the organization’s bandwidth usage as per business requirements with more effective controls on which employee consumes how much bandwidth (upload and download limits) during any time of the day”, said. Mr. Thanh. This helped the organization in controlling the employee behavior on the Internet.
- To Conclude
“Cyberoam is instrumental to my effort to upgrade SOS Children’s Village network to be more secure, robust and scalable. It has radically transformed our network in such a way that makes downtime a rare event. It is an ALL IN ONE solution for our total, connectivity, productivity and security needs.” Mr. Thanh concluded.
