SKVE Holdings picks Cyberoam for its Security
About SKVE HOLDINGS SDN BHD (SKVE), Highway Concessions

The SKVE HOLDINGS SDN BHD incorporated as a private limited company on 24th June 1996 under the Malaysian Companies Act 1965 was established as a special purpose company to initiate the privatization of the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE).

With the development of the country’s new administrative capital, Putrajaya, about 30km south of the Kuala Lumpur city centre, there was a need to have a good expressway which links Kuala Lumpur city centre to the new capital from the North-South Expressway.

The expressway is expected to provide new growth areas for residential and industrial sectors within the vicinity.

The SKVE network basically comprised of design, construction and project with no focused gateway security sketch. The organization, therefore, needed a gateway firewall to regulate user authentication and access control.

The challenges faced by SKVE Holdings are as follows:

Safeguarding the Network Periphery

The SKVE network basically comprised of design, construction and project with no focused gateway security sketch. The company contains the contract document and other client sensitive information and data that can be possibly targeted by attacks from external entities and outside access attempts. The organization, therefore, needed a gateway firewall to regulate user authentication and access control.

Scheming Surfing Patterns

The company wanted to keep an eye on and limit its users from accessing fruitless sites such as Facebook, Orkut and Myspace. Opening up access to these sites for all users resulted in bandwidth getting “choked”. “We wanted the solution to ensure that precious bandwidth is not worn out on downloads of audio, video and streaming media and bogus applications like Yahoo Messenger, Skype, MSN and instead, diverted to more productive use”, said Mr. Shahrizal Shahabudin, the Senior Executive at SKVE Holdings Sdn Bhd. He believes that Internet access is a resource that should not be wasted and so every user’s bandwidth usage ought to be distributed and monitored using content filtering. They needed strong web filtering solutions which could control all Internet access and give informative reports on Internet usage.

The Cyberoam Solution

After tracing the market for the right solution, SKVE Holdings purchased two (2) unit of CR15i appliance, which was soon deployed in gateway mode at their head office. After deploying the solution, the following benefits were noted:

  • The Barricade of Fire – Firewall

The Cyberoam firewall acts as a filter between the company’s gateway and the Internet in order to block malicious attempts to access the network, and allow only legitimate traffic.

ICSA and Checkmark - dual certified Cyberoam’s stateful inspection firewall solution now cordons off SKVE’s network and guards its servers against any unauthorized access. Also, employees were able to seamlessly continue to access Internet resources, while hackers on the Internet are kept at bay. The organization’s users are given controlled access to network and internet resources, ensuring that no security loopholes are left open.

  • Web Content Filtering

Cyberoam’s 82+ category tough Web Content filtering technology kept the organization’s internet resources effectively focused. The Content filtering feature makes sure that all P2P and Instant Messengers are blocked and that there is no breach of data. Cyberoam helps manage employee access to websites, minimizing lost time on the internet, and lowering operating costs. It also helps enforce internet usage policies based on bandwidth needs to prevent business losses and other issues that result from limited access to mission-critical applications.

  • To Wrap it Up

Discussing regarding his Cyberoam experience, Mr. Shahrizal commented, “We are more than happy with the service which has been provided. One of the most excellent features of Cyberoam is its on-appliance reporting feature that gave us constructive statistical results in the form of reports such as Internet Usage patterns, the number of sites which were non-productive or unhealthy and in knowing what exactly our users were doing in the network and what unproductive websites should be further blocked.”
