Like most organizations, Internet is used in our organization for vital business activities

“Like most organizations, Internet is used in our organization for vital business activities,” said Mr. Assaf Levy, IT Manager at SBI Uganda. In SBI, Internet is most frequently used for:

- Exchange of information through emails and regular browsing.
- Daily FTP batches for synchronizing logistical databases between their Head Office and up-country sites.
- Remotely administrating servers in up-country sites from their Head Office.
- VOIP communications especially with their mother company in Israel and sister company in Nigeria.

Any downtime in their Internet connectivity would result in great losses. Prior to Cyberoam installation, SBI had the following security concerns.

Unhealthy Web Surfing

Mr. Levy wanted to restrict employees from using Internet for non-business related purposes like casual surfing, social networking, torrents, chatting, gaming, watching videos and uploading/downloading high bandwidth files. “Unruly web surfing distracted the employees, clogged bandwidth and made the organization’s ISP bills shoot up to the skies,” said Mr. Levy. All Phishing, Pharming and malicious content over the Internet also needed to be plugged.

Business Continuity Concerns

“Internet is the lifeline for all our business activities,” said Mr. Levy. All work comes to a standstill if connectivity is lost. To avoid a single point of failure, SBI uses 2 ISP links. Hence, management of these links was of critical need.

The Cyberoam Solution

After looking into a number of security solutions in the market, including Cisco Firewall solutions, Mr. Levy decided to entrust Cyberoam with the security of SBI’s network.

“We had already experienced Cyberoam’s outstanding performance in our sister company in Nigeria, which encouraged us to trust Cyberoam,” said Mr. Levy. SBI purchased an all total of 20 (Twenty) Cyberoam Appliances, a combination of CR 25ia, CR 50ia and CR 100ia. All appliances are deployed in Gateway Mode at their Head Office and various up-country sites. The deployment locations are given in the table below.

  • Identity-based Security

Identity forms the basis upon which security policies in Cyberoam are defined. This identity-based security protects against insider threats by giving full visibility of user activities in the network. It is like monitoring exactly “Who is Doing What”. Mr. Levy used the local authentication feature of Cyberoam to take advantage of Cyberoam’s identity-based security. “The incorporation of Identity into security policies is one of the best features of Cyberoam”, said Mr. Levy.

  • Network Perimeter Secured

Cyberoam UTM shields the entire SBI network from outside threats. It’s ICSA and Checkmark certified firewall provides granular access controls over Internet traffic and network resources. Users are given controlled access to internet and network resources, ensuring that no security loopholes are left open.

In addition, Cyberoam’s Intrusion Prevention System acts as a second line of defense equipped with 4000+ updated signatures. It safeguards the SBI network from hackers, remote exploits, backdoor activity and other zero-hour attacks. Acting as an application firewall, it also supplements organizational efforts to curb data leakage through open proxies, instant messengers and P2P applications.

  • Controlled Internet Surfing

Cyberoam’s 82+ category strong Web Content Filtering technology kept the network’s resources productively focused. Mr. Levy said, “Being able to choose what sites to allow access to and what sites to block was an essential feature for us when deciding on buying the product.” Mr. Levy can control Internet access of each employee with the help of flexible and customized policies. All unhealthy and non-work related sites are blocked ensuring employee productivity and optimal use of bandwidth.

  • Business Continuity Upheld

Cyberoam’s Automatic Link Failover feature helps in upholding business continuity in SBI even in the face of an Internet-link outage. SBI uses 2 Internet links out of which one acts as the primary link while the other acts as a backup. In case of failure of the primary link, Cyberoam automatically redirects Internet traffic through the backup link without manual intervention. °Cyberoam’s Automatic Link Failover helps in business continuity and considerably reduces the work load of the IT team”, said Mr. Levy.

  • To Wind Up

“Cyberoam is very powerful in monitoring network activities and provides a secure network environment. We are very pleased with its performance,” said Mr. Levy.
