Pacific International Lines Kenya
Cyberoam – A One Box Internet Security Solution for Pacific International Lines
About Pacific International Lines, Shipping

Pacific International Lines (PIL), incorporated in 1967, is one of the largest ship owners in Asia and is ranked 19th amongst the top containership operators in the world. PIL has diversified its business into logistics related activities like supply chain management, consolidation/distribution facilities, warehousing, container depot operations, trucking as well as having interest in ship-agencies worldwide, container manufacturing, marine engineering and real estate.

PIL, being a shipping company, relied on Internet for communication, online banking, transaction processing and general surfing.

PIL needed a solution to protect the network against malware and other blended threats.

Mr. Meher Tiwari
IT Manager
PIL

“We used a network security solution to protect the network from spam, viruses and other malware. In spite of that we faced a lot of malware, security and connectivity issues”, Mr. Meher Tiwari, the IT Manager of PIL informed. “Our solution was old and unsatisfactory”, he further added.

PIL faced network security issues related to:

Uncontrolled Spam

Mr. Tiwari worryingly quoted, “Out of the total number of mails received, a surprising 60% were Spam. This was unbelievable and disturbing!” This consumed bandwidth and lead employees to read and delete mails individually which was a tedious and time consuming job. Some emails were such that tempted the employees to click malicious links which would ultimately lead to hassles for the organization and the employee. This led to an unacceptable loss of productivity.

Malware Threat

General and unrestricted surfing provided an entrance for the malware to enter the network. These malicious objects like Trojans, viruses, spyware etc. entered the network quietly and unknowingly through surfing, downloading and VPN tunnels.

Unrestrained Web Access

The employees of the company spent most of their time in unproductive browsing, chatting and accessing social websites like Facebook etc. Due to this productivity suffered and most of the bandwidth was unnecessarily consumed.

Unsecured Inter-Office Connectivity

Many employees of PIL accessed the data servers and applications located at the head office remotely. Hence, secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) connectivity between the head office and the branch office was a matter of concern for Mr. Tiwari.

The Cyberoam Solution

In order to deal with the challenges, PIL looked into many solutions like Cisco Firewall and Sonicwall and then finally, through the assistance of Overdrive Consultants - Cyberoam partner, they deployed two Cyberoam appliances in their network. They deployed one CR 100ia at Mombasa (Head Office) and one CR 25ia at Nairobi (Branch Office). They deployed both the appliances in Gateway Mode.

After the deployment of Cyberoam the business benefits are:

  • Network perimeter secured

Cyberoam Firewall is ICSA and Check Mark Level 5 Certified - provides granular access controls over Internet traffic and network resources. It also provides a Fusion technology that enables to create policies for multiple features through a single interface.

With a database of 4000+ IPS signatures Cyberoam’s Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) automatically detects, blocks and drops the suspicious HTTP, SMTP, POP3, FTP, IMAP, P2P and IM traffic ensuring network security. It also provides signature updating facility that updates the signatures regularly and provides zero-hour protection against latest attacks.

  • Controlled Spam

Cyberoam’s Check Mark Level 5 certified Anti-Spam solution provides Spam detection rate of over 98% and false positive rate of 1 in 1 million. This ensures that legitimate mails reach safely to employee’s inboxes while Spam is kept at bay leading to minimal business loss. This feature also offers IP based filtering solution that blocks the source which delivers the spam emails. In addition, the RPD technology which is content and language independent, offers real-time protection from the very first moment a new outbreak emerges.

After deploying Cyberoam Mr. Tiwari said, “Thanks to Cyberoam that has controlled spam emails to a great extent, leading to a clean mailbox”.

  • Malware Wiped Off

Cyberoam’s Check Mark Level 5 certified gateway Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware solution offers web, Email and Instant Messaging security against malware, including viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware and key loggers. Email, Web and VPN traffic is also scanned for malware. It also blocks attachments for specified file types like executables, media files, password-protected files etc. before any malware affects the network.

Mr. Tiwari said, “Cyberoam Anti-Virus ensured that no malware sneaked into the network”.

  • Restrained Web Access

Cyberoam’s Web filter solution offers one of the most comprehensive database with millions of URLs divided into 82+ categories, helping PIL to allow users to access only those websites that are productive. In addition, HTTPS scanning controls unauthorized secure access, thereby preventing data leakage.

Mr. Tiwari said, “With Cyberoam at my Internet gateway, I am ensured that all my employees are productively focused”.

  • Secured Inter-Office Connectivity

Cyberoam’s IPSec VPN provides secure remote access to remote users. IPSec VPN bridges the distances between the head office and the remote user. It ensures secure connectivity in such a way that the attacker will not be able to fiddle with the data. Thus no malware will be able to enter through the connection. Its road warrior connectivity enables the mobile users to securely access resources from anywhere.

Mr. Tiwari said, “Cyberoam’s VPN solution has increased efficiency and automation of PIL to a great extent”.

  • To Wind Up

Expressing his satisfaction Mr. Tiwari said, “We were very concerned about Internet security and Cyberoam has helped us to meet that need. We are very much satisfied by this Unified Threat Management (UTM) device”.
