We faced many issues related to hacking, data leakage, spam and bandwidth due to which our productivity and efficiency was affected tremendously.

Mr. Katiku J.
Group ICT Manager,
Medisel Kenya Limited

Mr. Katiku J., the Group ICT Manager at MKL outlined the requirement of Internet security by saying, “We faced many issues related to hacking, data leakage, spam and bandwidth due to which our productivity and efficiency was affected tremendously.”

The network issues they faced were:

Network Threats Causing Harm to the Periphery

MKL’s network contained confidential data about the customers, transactions, delivery, orders etc. All this sensitive data was under constant threat from DoS, IP Spoofing, Man-in-the-Middle and other network attacks. It was also necessary to control data tampering due to eavesdropping attacks from outsiders.

Unproductive Usage of Internet

Mr. Katiku J. said, “We often noticed employees wasting their time in unproductive activities like chatting, surfing, accessing social networking websites, playing games, uploading/downloading music, videos and other restricted content”. Hence, this not only affected the productivity but also major amount of bandwidth was inefficiently utilized. As a result, many valid websites became inaccessible.

The Spam Invasion

Mr Katiku J. was worried about the amount of Spam mails received in the network. He said, “On categorizing all the Emails, to our surprise we found an alarming 45-50% of Emails as Spam”. He also noticed that these mails led the employees to waste their precious time in reading and deleting the mails one by one. They also increased the load on the server, creating bandwidth congestion. Hence, he wanted to control these unwanted Emails that affected the productivity of the company.

The Cyberoam Solution

MKL considered many solutions like Checkpoint and Cisco ASA but they did not meet their above concerns. Then, after having a demo of Cyberoam from Copy Cat Ltd. (a Cyberoam partner), they purchased Three (3) Appliances. They deployed One (1) CR100ia at Medisel Thika (Head Office), One (1) CR50iNG at Dawa Ltd. and One (1) CR50iNG at Medisel Nairobi in Gateway Mode.

The benefits noticed after deploying Cyberoam in their network are:

  • Network Threats Kept at Bay

Cyberoam’s ICSA and Check Mark Certified Firewall, provides granular access controls over Internet traffic and network resources. Users are given controlled access to network and Internet resources, ensuring that no security loopholes are left open.

With a comprehensive database of 4500+ IPS signatures, Cyberoam’s Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) protects MKL’s network from spoofing, DoS and DDoS attacks in addition to keyloggers and Trojans. It also provides signature updating facility that updates the signatures regularly and provides zero-hour protection against latest attacks.

Mr. Katiku J. said, “Cyberoam has made us tension free from hackers and threats that can invade our network’s privacy and steel our confidential data”.

  • Productive Usage of Internet

Cyberoam’s Web Filtering solution provides a database of 100 Million websites divided into 89+ categories with the help of which Mr. Katiku J. can prevent the employees from accessing unproductive and harmful websites.

Cyberoam’s Application Filtering blocks all P2P, IMs, illegal audio, video, streaming media and other bandwidth-intensive download. Moreover, Cyberoam with its identity-based filtering, allows the administrator to create schedules and assign Internet access policies to individual users based on a certain criteria. In addition, HTTPS scanning controls unauthorized secure access, preventing unauthorized download, upload and data leakage. As a result, this helps MKL in increased productivity and security of network from malwares.

Mr. Katiku J. said, “Cyberoam’s Web and Application Filtering has enabled us to create customized policies to allow specific traffic to specific users, while by default most non-productive content is blocked”.

  • Spam Corked Away at the Entrance

Cyberoam’s Checkmark certified Anti-Spam solution ensures the safe arrival of genuine Emails to employee’s inboxes by providing Spam detection rate of over 98% and false positive rate of 1 in 1 million. Thus, it keeps the Spam at the shore, leading to reduced business loss. In addition, the Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD) technology which is content and language agnostic, offers real-time protection from the very first moment a new outbreak emerges.

After deploying Cyberoam Mr. Katiku J. said, “Cyberoam has reduced a substantial amount of Spam mails in the
