“Internet is used by almost all organizations, like ours, to maintain and enhance business continuity”, said Mr. Said Mohammad Amin Sadaat, IT Specialist at Black & Veatch, Afghanistan. They use Internet mainly for reporting, to communicate with their Head Office and partners, to boost up their procurement process and trainings. A safe and secure Internet connectivity is quite essential for them.

According to Mr. Sadaat, they were facing the following Internet security issues.

Unruly Web Surfing

A pressing concern for Mr. Sadaat was unproductive, unhealthy and possibly illicit Internet surfing by employees. He wanted to monitor and control web surfing patterns of individual employees, employee groups and the organization as a whole. Unruly surfing by employees often resulted in a Bandwidth Max Out. He wanted to pull the reins on Internet surfing to avoid employees from being distracted and the bandwidth from being choked.

Deluge of Spam

“Handling Spam was a real headache for us”, said Mr. Sadaat, expressing his exasperation over the constant Spam problem in their network. The flow of Spam throughout the network ate away precious bandwidth affecting network speed and availability. Spam flooded employees‘ inboxes compelling them to perform the tedious task of sorting through their mails to find legitimate ones.

Choked Bandwidth

Black & Veatch faced bandwidth congestion because the available bandwidth wasn‘t being used optimally. Employees abused their unrestricted Internet access through irresponsible activities like unproductive surfing, constant download of music, videos and other bandwidth intensive content. These activities dominated most of the available bandwidth leaving little room for actual work. Also, much of their bandwidth was choked because of unsolicited spam.

The Cyberoam Solution

After looking into a number of solutions, including SonicWall, Mr. Sadaat decided to go with Cyberoam. They deployed Three (3) Cyberoam appliances, One (1) CR 100ia in their Head Office in Kandahar, One (1) CR 100ia in their Duray Junction Branch Office and One (1) CR 50ia Kajaki Branch Office. All appliances are deployed in Gateway Mode.

Firewall – A Barricade of Fire

Cyberoam‘s ICSA and Checkmark - dual certified stateful inspection firewall now fortifies the Black & Veatch network and guards its servers against any unauthorized access. It detects intruders, blocks them from entering the company's computer network, records information, and notifies the system administrator about the source of the attempted break-in. In other words, Cyberoam keeps hackers at bay.

Spam Corked

“Cyberoam has saved us from the impending threat of Spam”, said Mr. Sadaat. Cyberoam‘s Gateway Anti-Spam, with a spam catch rate of 98%, checks all inbound and outbound mails for email spam, drastically reducing bandwidth and resource consumption. Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD) powered signature-less anti spam technology works instantly on deployment, with the least human intervention and is language independent. It blocks spam in any language regardless of the content, e.g. image, audio, video or zip-based spam. The anti spam feature is also equipped with Virus Outbreak Detection. This protects the organization against any zero day attack.

Web Surfing Controlled

Cyberoam‘s 82+ categories tough Web and Application Filtering technology made it easy for Mr. Sadaat to reign in unbridled surfing and downloading over the Internet by the employees. Cyberoam blocks inappropriate and unsafe Web content, including phishing and other malware-laden sites. This is done through a constantly updated database of millions of websites. Moreover, Cyberoam‘s identity-based filtering allows him to set individual user Internet access policies, surfing quota, time limits and bandwidth restrictions.

Bandwidth Usage Optimized

Cyberoam allows Mr. Sadaat to impose customized policies upon users such that they are allowed only as much amount of Internet access as required in their work. “Reigning in web surfing patterns of users drastically brought down bandwidth consumption of our network”, said Mr. Sadaat. Furthermore, reduction in the Spam flow also contributed to enhanced bandwidth availability.
