Cyberoam Unified Threat Management (UTM) appliances provided early protection against the latest Windows vulnerability that targets users of Yahoo Messenger, announced Elitecore Technologies. The Trojan takes control of the Yahoo messenger application and sends messages to the user’s contacts. The message contains links to websites which carry the Trojan Exploit.JS.ADODB.Stream.e.

This fast spreading Trojan attack which is targeting users of Yahoo Messenger was first reported on October 2nd. The wide user base of Yahoo messenger made millions of users vulnerable to this new attack. Users received messages with Trojan containing website links from infected contacts.

The severity of the attack rose due to the receipt of instant messages from a known contact and the tempting content of the message like: “oh my god, I’ve won a 20000 USD lottery http://nsl-school.org/?id=winning_list. Come to my house tonight for a party!!” This caused thousands of users to click the malicious URL and thus infect their systems. Variations of the content and links were reported too. |

“Cyberoam UTM appliances’ Gateway Anti-virus was one of the earliest to offer protection against the threat with the addition to its signature database,” says Harish Chib, Vice-President – Marketing, Elitecore Technologies. “While most desktop Anti-virus failed to detect it, Cyberoam offered a twin-shield protection to this new threat.”

Cyberoam HTTP Anti-virus scanning prevents the Trojan attack at its very entry by blocking the Trojan containing website. While blocking the infected website, Cyberoam educated its users through a warning message which explained the Virus-carrying nature of the site. Secondly, the Intrusion Prevention System(IPS) feature in Cyberoam’s latest release will allow Network Administrators to create custom IPS signatures to block such instant messages containing the malicious URL. Also, Cyberoam IPS will send intrusion alerts with details like username, IP address and time of alert to enable administrators to isolate the infected system from the enterprise network instantly and take corrective action.

Kaspersky Lab’s Anti-virus engine integrated into the Cyberoam security appliance has enabled Cyberoam to provide rapid response to such emerging threats. This plays an important role in enabling Cyberoam to deliver complete Internet security to more than 1000 corporations, educational institutes and government organizations worldwide.
