  6 million infected computers worldwide are connected to a botnet and most owners of infected computers do not even know that their machines have been compromised, according to estimates.

According to recent findings by an IT security company, top botnets are capable of sending more than 100 billion spam per day. Also,s over the years, botnet capability has increased substantially to the point of blurring the lines between traditional categories of malware. In fact, Botnets can be compared to an army engaged in an attack on the network while Internet threats like viruses, worms, Trojans, Spam etc., are mere ammunition fired by the botnet army.

  Almost 80% of the total malicious programmes, mainly the last month’s leading malicious programme — Trojan DNSChanger.ech, showed significant changes and was classified as new vis-à-vis their July 2008 counterparts, according to the new Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) technology which is in its second month of compiling data.

However, in spite of the changes– Trojan DNSChanger.ech – remains at the top of this ranking. Overall, it is more than three times more widespread than the program which comes in second place. This indicates that there is quite a large-scale epidemic caused by DNSChanger.
