They are at it again! Although they are big troublemakers for anyone in my profession, I have started to appreciate the perseverance and diligence of spamsters, albeit at creating trouble in the cyberspace.
This time around spamsters have come up with a new spam tactic using hyperlinks to Macromedia Flash (.swf) files that automatically redirect to a spammer site. In the initial outbreak, the spammer site was of the "Canadian Pharmacy" type. However, the same tactic can be used for any type of spam, or even redirection to malware sites.
This is another addition to their tireless attempts at bypassing the traditional content-based filters. For all we know, it may be a trial run before the menacing, malware-laden attacks using Macromedia Flash files seen floating all over the web.

The first Top 20 List for July is a ranking of the most widespread malicious, advertising, and potentially unwanted programs. Among the fundamental classes of malware, TrojWare topped the list, emerging as the cause of 76 % of all infected computers. Overall, in July 2008, there were
20,704 unique malicious, advertising, and potentially unwanted programs detected on users' computers. |
